I'd suggest that you get Kawaguchi's book, "Growth Morphogenesis". He explains what Metaballs are and how he uses them. The system that rendered the Metaballs and the software appear to be proprietary. I wish Imagine had some way of or- ganically morphing smooth shapes – letting them grow in a fractal pattern over- time.
