#Blue Ribbon – Bah Humbug
Melissa,
Thank you for your note. I appreciate your personal answer and views
on the subject. It is a good sign when the company president cares
enough to take time to answer a critism herself.
I abhor software piracy. I only want to use legal software that is
registered to me. I'm sorry to hear your assessment that piracy is
getting worse and worse. But, I am still not sure how your Licensee
Transfer Fee will combat incessant piracy.
I did not buy version 1.0 of Bars & Pipes Pro and try to
"double-upgrade".
I bought the latest version, 2.0, which the owner had for less than
3 months and no longer planned to use. All I am asking is that you
record the fact that he no longer owns your software and that I do.
It is admirable that you sell a package of support and services along
with each piece of excellent software. It shows that you are
committed to maintaining a topnotch product.
I am not asking for extra services from you. You receive financial
remuneration for each original copy you sell. I do not want original
copy services. I only want to assume the remaining services on this
copy. The original owner relinquished his ownership of those
services when he wrote transfering all rights to the software to me.
If I have to pay a $99 transfer fee to be listed as the registered
owner instead of the person who sold it to me, you are benefiting
twice from one copy of software; and there still would only be one
registered owner getting your support.
It would seem to me that anyone buying the latest version of used
software would be buying the future upgrade potential and that the
person selling would be forfeiting it. Other software companies use
different methods to protect against "double-upgrades". When someone
buys their software they receive a registration or user number. If
they upgrade, they don't get a new registration number, but just
continue to have the same user number, now with the newer version.
I have been using an Amiga for several years. This is the first time I
have gotten involved with used software. So, the transfer process is new
to me. I do appreciate your commitment to the Amiga. Keep up the good
work.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
John R. Baird, M.D.
