I've thought about hiring East European and Russian programmers. A week ago, I
had a chance to talk with a successful Russian software developer. He said
it's very tough to do business over there. He said he wouldn't havev tried it
unless he spoke Russian, and even then, it was very difficult.
Although it may be very "cheap," I worry about the logistics. Sure, I could
send someone a check or a system or a compiler. Do I know what I'm getting in
return? What if I can no longer contact this person by phone, what do I do?
Is my investment lost? And given the common attitudes about piracy and
protection of source code, I'd worry that the code I paid for would appear on
an international ftp site. I worry plenty about code security when it's on a
computer right here in my office… I'd go crazy with my code spread around
the world. Entirely insecure.
And recently I had a programmer from Holland approach me about work… they
wanted roughly the same pay as someone might get here in the States. I'm sure
the situation of underpaid but qualified East European programmers won't last
long. (I know, Holland isn't East Europe.)
