Salaries I mentioned was per-month. And costs of living ? Try to count with me.
Let's say that our imaginary programmer has a salary $500 (very good). Taxes
$100 Flat, electricity $150 (small appartment, 2 rooms+kitchen)
Food $120 Phone $ 20
Subtotal $390
so, you can save approx. $110 per moth (if you have no childrens etc.) Several
other prices: Computer <g> $2000 – $3000 depends on config. prices are a bit
lower than US Pair of shoes $100 Jacket $100 (czech made) $800 (good
mark, like Boss, Valentino etc.) TV $500 – $1000 Car from
$10.000

You are right that low prices will not prevent piracy completely. But can lower
the number of potential pirates.
