Doug,
I wouldn't be surprised if there was a type 1 font with the vertically sliced
style you described. If you have Corel 3,4 or 5 you might look through the font
sheet.
Otherwise, I would slice up the polygons in the 2d shaper using segment/refine
before lofting.
