John, What version of the operating system will you be using? Under the 2.0 and later versions of the OS the outline font support will allow you to get exceptional output. Under the 1.2 and 1.3 versions of the OS high quality printing would be limited to double the screen density. With the exception of the A1000 the deskjet works with normal industry standard cables and gives you a choice of ports, though the parallel port is much preferred. Also which model of the DeskJet are you considering. The 500C and 550C both have special issues regarding drivers primarily associated with the way color support has been implemented.
