This shouldn't be a problem if you don't change the units settings in 3DS between importing data from one time to another. The only times I've had problems were after creating geometry in 3DS and then importing DXF from ACAD into the file (either metric or imperial). The key is to use the correct units settings in 3DS. Beware, you can set these to meaningless combinations. If you just keep updating meshes in 3DS with data from ACAD, they should be spatially and "unitally" identical (keeping the UCS, origin, and units the same in ACAD, and the units the same in 3DS).
