John, There is a way of unmarking bad sectors to make them good, but it's only recommended if you can guarantee the sectors are bad. Norton Utilities v7.0 (and I presume v8.x) will as well, have a program called DISKTOOL (I think) which allows you to mark sectors as good OR bad. However, this must be done on a sector by sector basis and hence is very time consuming. I used to have a PC utility called Disk Manager that would do a "lower level" check on the sectors on your hard disk and ask if sectors previously marked as bad that it found to be good, should become good again. Although I've not seen the product or updates since then, I'd imagine there are utilities that will do a similar thing. In fact, there are "low-level" sector editors associated with disk rescue that would almost definitely do the trick. Hope this is of some help, Steve Gardiner – Sipping afternoon tea in London
