make a boot disk that bypasses the troublesome root drive. basically need
NTLDR, NTDETECT.com, NTBOOTDD.sys and boot.ini.. This should allow you to boot
into NT and bypass boot drive. You then can mangle to your heart's content and
then do a restore.
