I'm at those things for business, Ed, and usually everything that's not
taken up by the family (who travel with me) is all business there. It
really doesn't matter what city (or country) they're in. They're different
than the regionals, where you're just attending or performing. Real work
goes on behind the glitter of the worldcon.
Most worldcons make those kinds of puns, although some, like LACon,
are dull. This is, I think, the first one in San Francisco; prior ones were
in Berkeley/Oakland, when things were smaller and hotels like the Claremont
could be used. Ah, nostalgia…. The 1968 worldcon was at the Claremont in
Berkeley the same weekend as the Berkeley Riots. Trying to have fun with
the waft of tear gas in the air….
Worst named worldcon, by acclamation, was Phoenix in '78, which called
itself IguanaCon.
