Your reasoning seems sound but I know of Pro Audio CD Players which use
caddies and these are big machines – no problem with limited space. In this
case the caddy definitely is to protect the disc from sloppy DJs.
Perhaps the caddy was introduced for the resaons you state and then the
side effect of protecting the disc was considered desirable. Who knows?
