The SBPro with CDROM kit actually contains _two_ cards. One is the
controller for the CDROM drive, which connects by a broad band cable and by a
thin audio wire cable to the SBPro audio card. This was a great surprise to
me, because folks on Prodigy had been saying that you saved a slot by
purchasing the kit. Thus I jumped to the conclusion that the CDROM cable
plugged directly into the SBPro card–but what I thought was the CDROM
interface is only the extra gameport.
My dealer says that I can install the CDROM controller card in the top of
my tower case–instead of having it in an expansion slot–but the two cables
supplied are too short for this. Thus I'll have to buy some sort of cable
kit, if it is available, to free the slot. There's nothing like being able
to physically inspect the hardware, I always say.
Anyhow, in my older machine (yeah, mine), the SLL CDROM controller card
sits next to my SBPro card, and they function together to play everything.
My plain SBPro Basic card did not include any CDROM interface card at all.
I have the SLL CDROM drive and SBPro audio card cabled, for the purpose of
playing audio compact discs, from the CDROM external jacks to the SBPro audio
input socket that you use to connect ANY external CD player and get SBPro
output to the desktop speakers. Is that clear enough for an electrician to
follow? You're not the only one who's learning stuff here.
On your recommendation, I bought MULTIMEDIA MADNESS today. It's pretty
good at explaining what you can and cannot expect your multimedia system to
do. Thanks. Should save lots of time.
