I dont necessarily think that the activities have to be sequential, they could happen at the same time. For example a focused study of lighting, atmospheric effects and surfaces as used in painting or film might be initiated by a dissatisfaction with 3d results that are too computer looking. The disadvantages of the "as needed" approach is the fragmented nature of the education. Persuing art, film studies systematically would lead to a more thorough and organized knowledge base but would take longer. Ed
