IMO, ILM has the best film effects, with great integration into the story, and
have always been a (the?) leader in film effects. Compositing, morphing, 3D
characters, etc.
Pixar made some killer Listerine commercials, with a great attention to detail,
and a fun look. I've been impressed with PDI/R&H/etc. but nothing they've done
stands out as much as ILM in my mind. Star Wars, ET, T2, Jurassic, Casper,
etc.
I don't doubt the abilities of the "smaller" studios to create various stuff as
great, or greater than ILM, but their limited resources haven't allowed them to
put their efforts into the very large projects. Casper had 43 minutes of CGI,
and from what I've seen in previews, it fits perfectly into the story. Feature
films are pretty different than shorts. I'd have fun working at any of them,
just take them out of the smog and off fault lines. 😉
