The following definition was extracted from "The Digital Fact Book":
"CCIR-601 specifies encoding parameters for digitised video. CCIR-601 is
normally taken to refer to colour difference component digital video (rather
than RGB) for which it defines 4:2:2 sampling at 13.3 MHz with 720 luminance
per active line and 8 or 10 bit digitising."
