Rick,
Probably the biggest fear everyone had to keep reassuring me about during the
whole process of putting my system together was heat. Ask Murph, I'm sure he'll
tell you about it <g>. Cameron and Murph both assure me that I'm much too
paranoid about it. I explained to them that I will have this system upstairs,
in a 2500 sq. ft. house that is not the easiest place to keep cool in
Louisiana. But, they say the heat will not be a problem without the CPU fan.
I'm not sure which fan Cameron was going to use, since it became obvious in the
beginning that we were going to use no CPU fan. I JUST got off the phone with
Murph (he said he was going to call you when we hung up BTW) and he said that
the PVR card, as opposed to the PAR card requires no targa card to do what the
PAR did with it. Whew! did that make any sense? Anyway, the PVR with the
daughter card will handle all the video in and out. It takes hours to do what
the PAR took weeks to do. And, you don't need a frame accurate recorder to go
with it. Again, Murph would be a good one to ask about that.
The power supply Cameron is looking into is called a 3.3 power supply. He's not
sure if they are ready for retail yet, but says that will be the way everyone
goes in the future.
The scanner needing a card slot or not. I'm still not real sure about that. I
was basing what I said on some of the ads saying, "SCSI card included". They
may very well plug into or piggyback with the existing SCSI works.
If your trying to decide whether to get the PAR or the PVR I highly recommend
the PVR. It's the same price as the PAR and does a whole lot more. If you
already own a PAR, it depends on your budget I guess, whether it's worth your
while to switch. Keep in mind though, that I don't actually have my hands on
any of this stuff, I just going by what I've read and been told.
I see you tag "Technical Animations" to your name. Are you an operating
animation business, or just getting started like me? What type of workstation
are you looking at buying? PC platform? Dual CPU?
I'll be more than happy to keep you informed of how all this goes. It will be
long past Friday before I get my hands on it though.
Terry
