Here is a fairly well substantiated 'rumor' which should be of interest to
Lattice users. I'm an ex-classmate of John Toebes' and as such I like to
keep in touch with him concerning the Amiga front. Recently he let me know
that Lattice's new C compiler which 'should' be out in late summer/early fall
will be a completely revised product. The code produced by the new compiler
will compare favorably with Aztec's, since addressing will be done in the
same manner, using some sort of byte-offset scheme. Furthermore, John and
some friends of his have been working together (as The Software Distillery)
on a new Amiga Linker (blink), which will link both old-style and new
(Lattice) object modules. It is also faster and smaller than alink. So far,
they've gotten the linker to link itself, so it seems to be coming along
okay. Plans with Commodore to release this linker have not yet been made, but
I'm sure it'll find its way to the public. Just thought I'd let this news out
so that Lattice users who are thinking of purchasing Aztec C can consider
waiting a month or two to see what develops. More on this story as it comes
