Greg, The same way someone recognizes that an upside down 'L' with the arrow facing left and enclosed in a red circle with a red diagonal slash means 'No Left Turn'. Or that a Hexagonal Red sign on the corner of an intersection with some letters in it in white means 'Stop'. The use of 'universal' symbols transcends written words.
