What's backward? You said that _everyone_ recognized the sign "No
Smoking" and I was merely pointing out the fact that may who read only a
foreign language might not recognize what those words meant. And because
there was the possibility of it not being recognized, in many instances, it's
also printed in the predominant second language spoken in the area. Here in
Denver, that happens to be Spanish, so I see them in both Spanish and
English.
In other parts of the country, I would imagine they are in other
languages also, and would guess that in parts of Canada…they are in French.
If everyone recognized what those words meant…why go to the trouble
of putting it in another language? To me, it only makes sense if in fact,
there are persons who don't recognize the English words.
