Lynn – thanks much for looking this info up! Sounds great as long as all the programs use it! Yah, deadlock is possible on any locking system… even OS-9 provides a means of timeout if wished on its automatic locking. If all processes only lock one file section at a time, deadlock won't happen. But if two processes each locked different parts, and then without unlocking go try to read the other guy's locked section… you're in trouble. They would each wait forever without a timeout. Thanks again! I prefer automatic simply because you don't have to worry about whether the programmer has specifically taken care of things, but if the AmigaDOS users push hard enough, maybe they can get the programmers to wake up and use that possibly forthcoming partial-file lock call. Would make a lot of things much easier for future Amiga net/business software! thx – Kev
