Ah, but you see, it's of limited usefulness. I think THAT'S the reason you
haven't seen it done, not because it isn't easy.
Consider: first of all, you need a 12 or 14 or whatever bit sampler to digitize
the input (unless you're porting from some other source).
Then, you have to realize that "high resolution" mode is going to reduce Ami to
two channels: left and right. That cuts out any possibility for use in music
programs as instruments, since you could only play two notes at once.
This leaves sampling of music. But at the wider word width, you've doubled
your storage requirements. Then, figure the whole idea behind the high quality
sampling would demand stereo, which doubles it again. Then figure you've got
to sample at a rate that makes the increased word width worthwhile, say 30 KHz,
at least. So, you're looking at a storage requirement of about 7 MEGABYTES PER
MINUTE. Small wonder that nobody's done anything with it commercially. 8)
What _I_ want to do is simply prove it can be done, as a demonstration of how
far the Amiga's hardware can be pushed. If I can track down someone with a CD
player with digital outputs, I'll port from that to the Amiga and decimate down
to whatever playback rate I can handle. If the Amiga can do what I _think_ it
can do, 75% or better of the people hearing the demo shouldn't be able to hear
the difference between the Amiga and the CD, even
