The point is well taken … thanks for that.
When you say that you "lump the Amiga with the Atari", I think that is how
a lot of people feel (perhaps that is the fault of Commodore marketing) …
but the Amiga is a _very_ different machine to the Atari. Apart from
feeling much more repsonsive, the Amiga is a true multi-tasking computer
and has very powerful graphics. Those that know the Amiga and the other
"mainstream" machines often see the Amiga as more like the Mac than the
Atari. It gets lumped with the Atari because of its appearance, price and
the games that are available.
Yet the Amiga is finding a popular place within the audio/video world, and
is starting to become a proto-standard with many studios using it for
animatics, animation, on-screen graphics and titling … it is starting to
find its place in the market.
Of course, the Amiga can emulate the Mac extremely well … the AMax board
might be a useful investment for your son since it will allow him to run
Mac software. The only difficulty is in the disk drives, since the Mac is
rather quirky in that it uses variable-speed drives … but that is not
insurmountable.
You'll also find that the Amiga community is also a lively one … the
Amiga forums are certainly very active.
Anyway, I'm glad that you were able to clear up the situation regarding 2.0
… I think we all feel very defensive about this new OS, because we know
that the Amiga's image suffers when the down-side gets unfairly and
prematurely publicised.
