John–
Keep in mind that whether or not a factory seal is present on the box has
no bearing on the stated warranty policy of the Amiga 3000.
A seal may be there to simply provide authorized CBM repair an indicator of
whether or not the box has been opened. Certainly helpful to a technician
trying to asses damage to a computer.
CBM's warranty policy is stated very clearly, IMHO, in the documentation
included with each machine, and while it warns that CBM will not be
responsible for damaged caused by user installed expansions/modifications
and SUGGESTS that expansion be left to a service center, it in no way says
that the user may not take such tasks upon themselves, along with the
responsibility for performing those tasks.
That is their official policy. It has not waivered, and I am baffled by
those who think this is a 'gray' area. The only choice you have to make is
whether or not you are willing to take responsibility for:
a) The installation of an accessory (just adding RAM requires removing all
internal drives, the power supply AND the daughter board!) and,
b) Any damage a defective expansion part/device may cause your system.
