Bill (and Vic),
Gee…here's an "official" definition from the ITT 'Reference Data
for Radio Engineers' book:
Read/Write Memory (RAM): A generic term for either a volatile or
nonvolatile memory the contents of which may be altered at will or read out
without alteration. RAMs are randomly addressable and are readily
implemented using various semiconductor technologies.
Read-Only Memory (ROM): A generic term for a nonvolatile memory
whose contents are mask-programmed during the semiconductor processing
procedure and whose contents may not be altered thereafter. ROM's are
randomly addressable and are utilized for the storage of reference data,
micro-instructions, and various codes.
