Bill (and Vic), Gee…here's an "official" definition from the ITT 'Reference Data for Radio Engineers' book: Read/Write Memory (RAM): A generic term for either a volatile or nonvolatile memory the contents of which may be altered at will or read out without alteration. RAMs are randomly addressable and are readily implemented using various semiconductor technologies. Read-Only Memory (ROM): A generic term for a nonvolatile memory whose contents are mask-programmed during the semiconductor processing procedure and whose contents may not be altered thereafter.
