I agree with much of what you said, but… Certainly, Apple and IBM are out to carve up the market amongst themselves and those who they deem fit to license their technology. While I understand your considerable UNIX experience, we are talking about two different markets. UNIX in its present incarnation (and I'm talking a bit from ignorance here as I have never tried UNIX; my office machines for the most part don't have the horsepower to run it) will not significantly penetrate the small business, due to its complexity and hardware/software requirements. No doubt there is a significant installed base of UNIX machines, but there is a difference between that and general acceptance in the business community, and THERE is my disagreement with your position. Even in medium sized companies and larger, UNIX is not as generally accepted as PCs, IMHO. Commodore is apparently doing the right things in its approach to porting UNIX. But if its other markets dry up in a few years due to competition from IBM/Apple, will UNIX alone be enough to carry them? Maybe, but it's certainly not a given. Over the flight pattern… – via Whap!
