Gee, how do you draw a sideways-smiley-face with egg on it? <grin> I stand
corrected: it is MITI, not MITA (I'm going to have to stop staying up so
late at night ;-). As to whether or not market protection is a good idea is
something of a moot point (I didn't say unimportant :-), as there are
already laws in existence which provide for varying levels of market
protection. I guess the bigger isssue is whether or not the Japanese should
be required to comply with American law. If American companies are not
allowed to compete by selling products below cost, should Japanese
companies be restricted also? As far as US companies taking-the-same-risks,
I don't think it is much of a risk when your government is backing you with
truck-loads of money. Once you have the lion share of the market, you can
simply raise prices to new heights to get the investment capital back. Does
this sound like what happened after we starting coming down on the Japanese
for dumping semi-conductor memories (I know, I know… it was simply in
response to our actions… or was it ;-).
