Erik,
Unless I've misunderstood your question, all you need to do is go to
the camera control panel in LightWave and change the the zoom factor
(second gadget from the top). Simply enter a new number. The higher the
number, the narrower the field of vision (this part wasn't documented
anywhere, I just used trial and error).
If you want to animate a focal length change just do so using the
Zoom Factor envelope.
