Single-Framming

We're currently using the DAT drive to backup many disks on our
network, however I can retrieve any single file (or directory) at will.
Each invocation of the 'backup' progam also writes a 'file mark' on the
tape so that separate versions can be found very quickly. I hope this is
the sort of answer you're looking for.
