new amigas
Let me give you my perspective which comes from working in an Amiga
dealership.
It is my opinion that Commodore is doing the right thing in not releasing
pre-release details of any new technologies that they may have in the
works. Including custom chips and new computers. Why? Because we
purchase our computers from Commodore to resell to you our customer. The
last thing in the world we need is to have people come in and say "Golly, I
heard about those new Amigas. Are they here yet?" I say "No, that may not
be here for another month or so." They say "Call me when the new boxes
come out…after all I don't want to be left in the cold!".
So my stock gathers dust and is not sold. Commodore's warehouse is then
full of Amiga computers, and they have to declare a loss. Remember that
Commodore US buys their machines from Commodore International. Commodore
US wants to keep as low an inventory as possible. Announcing new product;
especially when they are not ready only hurts sales and ruins Commodore's
reputation. Just look at Atari if you want living proof of how not to run
a computer company; and trust me they announce things quite often.
Consider the A570 and the lost CDTV sales because of delays in getting that
unit released. The A570 is a product that has been shown a million times,
never once a production date published and look.. CDTV sales are flat
because people are 'waiting' for the A570. Latest word on that is
September folks. 🙂 In fact, everything may happen in September my birds
tell me. I just wish I knew what "everything was". 🙂
Ut oh… did I just single handedly ruin Amiga sales across the nation? 🙂
