To further complicate the discussion, most sound boards have an audio
line-in connector, and most "multimedia upgrade" kits include a cable to
connect the CD-ROM drive's audio out to this line-in.
The result is supposed to be a mixture of Redbook audio & internally
generated sound. I've seen each, but never combined. I suppose it would
make for interesting games – CD Audio playing, digital effects from the
soundcard.
