Erik, let me add my voice! Quicktime, with all its flaws, is growing faster than fungus in the Everglades. If we don't jump on the wagon, we'll be left in a cloud of dust. As others have said, Quicktime is a _standard_ which depends on various compression routines to do its work; as time goes by, we're seeing more efficient software routines show up, _and_ compressors which use hardware add-ons to do the work. It's only a matter of time before the high-end hardware comes down in price, and when that time comes, Quicktime will be ready for it; Amiga owners will still be scrambling with an assortment of proprietary, incompatible formats.
