Jim: the reason you have to pay double for a subscription in Canada is entirely due to postage and the laws. Magazines usually get special rates for postage if they're big enough. The same is true in both countires. But US magazines can't just send a bunch of copies to Canada and mail them from there with the special rate. Canadian lawas require Canadian content/ownership/edition or whatever. That's why Time magazine stopped making a real Cnd edition—because the govt wouldn't let them have cheap postage. There is a current controversy over Sports Illustrated's Cnd edition, which somehow qualifies for the special rate. And yes, GST is included in the Cnd price as well. Canada requires that foreign publishers collect GST for them. (Which doesn't make US mag publishers very happy, since no other country does something like that.) Mike Loader (a Canadian now living in the US who is enjoying resubscribing to magazines at half the price. 😉
