Ben, "the waves won't damp towards the edge" — but if you make your ellipse grow at the same speed as the waves, and ensure the ellipse's edge is at a zero-point in the wave pattern (tough to verbalize), then at least you'll have a smooth edge. The waves will start at full intensity, but you won't have a seam on the edge of your ellipse. Blaq!
