It is in fact USGS DEM files. You may be in luck! They also sell add-on DEM file for most of the US. As far as the book goes, the different programs illustrate different points. VistaPRO illustrates fractal 3D usage and Wolf3D illustrated 3D technology applied to games. At the time we needed final versions of the software, Wolf3D was the only program available. The newer versions from Apogee aren't available yet and won't be for some time. Although VistaPro supports USGA DEM files, the ones you have may not be in the correct format. They may put soe sort of header or something on them…
