For removing the face from the cylinder, it should be pretty straightforward as
long as you haven't rotated the cylinder at all. If you have rotated it,
rotate it back to its original position, or recreate it.
1. Make sure you are in Full Draw mode (not Box Mode) for the display.
2. You have to pick the correct viewport to select the face in. Don't choose
the viewport where the cylinder looks like a circle, pick one of the other ones
where you can see the length of the cylinder. Choose Select/Face/Window and
draw a box around the top edge of the cylinder in one of those viewports. You
should see the top edge of the cylinder turn red in all the viewports.
3. Choose Modify/Face/Delete and turn Selected ON. Click on the viewport. The
face should disappear. The mesh won't look any different on screen, you'll
have to render it to see the difference.
