Uses of digital imaging
*
Martin,
Do you remember that Arnold Swazchewagestoruwinklestaminer <g> film in which
they use computers to simply invent reality in television? I think it was
called the Running Man. Certainly, if they get to that level of realism… then
everyone will have something to be worried about. What really worries me about
this is not the use of digital actors and sci-fi like stuff by TV companies…
what really is frightening is the use of this tecnology by the goverment. In
fact, they have used the simulation before with a lot of success. Remeber
Reagan's Star Wars project. While I am sure the soviets known that it was
possible but in a very distant future, the people in the streets simply see the
fancy movies in TV all day, believing that, actually, the US have lasers
cannons in the space. I just see a program in Discovery some months ago about
the disaster of the SW project. Never worked the way they expected and most of
the projects have been abandoned.
The goverment also used the "Image" (not simulated but…) during the Gulf War.
Again and again they passed the Maverick and the laser guided bombs films to
show how effective the US forces were being. Later it was discovered that the
effectiveness of US air forces was bellow minimun. In fact, the strongest role
in the air war was played by Allied pilots.
If we all already know how govertments arround the globe manipulate population
in one way or another, what should we expect when the digital imaging
technologies get so perfect to show _reality_ instead of clear computer
animation. I know, I know, all this sound apocaliptic, but I think it is quite
possible.
Talking about the uses of computer animation, here has been an strong debate
about use of computer animation in the court. Certainly, you will never see it
in an european court or accepted by an european judge, specially in a criminal
case.
Remeber that most people in the forum (if not all) know what is real and what
is not real in a tape. We can even say "how they do that" most of the times.
However, when the technolgy gets so perfect to confuse the most expert of the
eyes… then we are in deep trouble.
All this will give a new meaning to the word "relativism" in philosophy and
real live. Heraclito, here we go!!!

ps. But yes, I will like to get my hands in a hyperrealistic air combat
