#A1200 + SCSI+
Robert, you may recall we discussed our mutual slow 120m seagates in our 1200's
quite a while ago. I've tried all sorts of changes (maxtransfers, masks, etc)
with no improvements.
It's been a while but I remember changing the maxtransfer to a low value of 512
bytes! (which gave me very bad results) I then increased that value twofold
(1024, 2048 etc.) I ran tests to see what happened at each value. I don't
recall exactly but around 4k or 8k I was getting near 200k/reads…anything
higher resulted in a very minimal improvement!
Anyway, I bought the Expansion System's IDE external case and a 240 meg 3.5"
IDE drive. (the maxtor is running about 3 times faster)
When I first installed the maxtor I noticed the seagate seemed quicker.
So I ran some tests and was surprised!
But then Murphy got in the way!
After coping everything from the seagate to the maxtor I was going to
repartition the seagate. Something went wrong with the Expansions System's
software and when I went to use RDPrep it didn't like something about the rdb
in the seagate. So I used HDToolbox which corrected the problem. But now my
seagate is back at the pokey 200k/sec read rate. <sigh>
Do you know if the scsi expansion will fit and work with their external ide
case and drive? What's the price? I may get one soon just to speed this
system up until I find (can afford) a decent cd-rom!
later!
