The Sync Strainer does the job of the basic Commodore adapter until a gen-lock (read: Toaster) is started up. At that point, the Amiga stop putting out Horizontal and Vertical sync signals. The Sync Strainer takes composite sync and splits it into the H and V syncs that the multi-syncs need. The Sync Strainer is available with a 9-pin "D" or a 15-pin high- density "D" connector, with the 15-pin unit being much more popular. The 15-pin "D" is the closest thing to a monitor connector standard that exists. The Mitsubishi uses a custom pinout on their 25-pin "D".
