A magnitude 3.7 earthquake was felt throughout the San Fernando Valley and jolted Southern California coastal communities Sunday, Jan. 9 swaying buildings and rattling windows but apparently causing no damage. The quake shortly after 3 p.m. (during our geology conference) was centered two miles south of Santa Monica, according to preliminary estimates, said seismologist Kate Hutton at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. A second temblor was felt in parts of the West Los Angeles area shortly after 10 p.m., but there were no immediate estimates of its force. In the earlier quake, two sharp jolts were felt in the San Fernando Valley, Santa Monica, West Los Angeles, Venice and Malibu. The fault involved in the quake was not immediately known said the USGS in Menlo Park, Calofornia. Rod
