A defect prevented PhonePak from working reliably in most cases, causing voice messages to change pitch or become garbled. Service Management Group ("SMG") of Columbia, Maryland will perform the necessary upgrade to the Commodore 68040 processor board for $99. Interested parties should contact SMG at 610-363-4003 for further upgrade information. The culprit, according to Christopher Darsch, President of Atlantis, is the U209 chip on the '040 processor board. "We got Commodore to fix this problem in time for the first production run of 4000 towers, but they went out of business before the information got any further." Darsch subsequently gathered the information needed to produce the revision 3 U209 and formed an alliance with SMG, a service provider for various computer systems and Commodore's warranty administrator, to do the upgrade. "We are pleased that this fix, along with the recent release of the revision 11 Buster chip for the Amiga 3000, allows PhonePak to work as designed in any Amiga with Zorro II slots," said Darsch. Amiga 3000 owners formerly had to install a Zorro II memory board before they could use PhonePak. On a related note, version 2.4 of the PhonePak software is now available from the GVP section of the AmigaVendor forum on CompuServe, as well as from GVP's own BBS (610-337-5815). Version 2.4 offers several new features including distinctive ring support, temporary greetings, and greatly improved performance. "In the wake of Commodore's demise," said Darsch, "we want to show our continued commitment to the Amiga community." PhonePak has been in development by Atlantis since 1987, and the product was named 1993 Communications Product of the Year by CU Amiga, a leading Amiga magazine in the United Kingdom.
