I've been looking at the spec sheets for a radio modem from a company called FreeWave Technologies at (303) 444-3862. It's a wireless, frequency-hopping, spread-spectrum 900 Mhz modem that delivers 115.2 kbps uncompressed throughput from modem to modem. Each modem has a unique serial number, and they are addressable as well as multi-cast-able. They claim distances of up to 20 miles "line of sight", but I'd love to determine what that really means before a dump $2,500 on a pair of these. The basic unit is smaller than a disk drive and includes a rubber-duckie antenna. Optional external antennas are possible, including a $100 12-db gain directional Yagi. Anyone out there with experience with these modems? I've only been getting Network Computing for a few months, so I don't know if they've been covered recently.
