Well, we have an expression in French that says soemthing like "There's no smoke without a fire". If you see some little shiny spots when you hold the disc up to light, it's likely the disc is faulty soemwhere on its surface. It's difficult to spot such scraps in normal conditions. It's usually an upside (surface) reflecting part that has gone, most of time because of physical harm. As for the green/gold preference, I'd like to add I've treated some Kodak discs badly (letting them fall and hit a corner of a table etc) and they never lost their surface integrity.
