It can be done but requires a high end sound card in the computer and software to edit/break the files. The signal stays digital when done correctly but I'm afraid it's not simple and it's not easy and it's not cheap. It'll cost you about $2400 plus the cost of a Digital DAT player. Digidesign seems to have the best system I've seen so far. Beware, there are a lot of sharks who claim to be able to do such a conversion but very few real solutions. Many of the processes resample the data to analog then convert back to digital and you'll lose quality in the process. Frankly the cheapest solution is to take your DAT to a recording studio and have them record a one-off for you. They'll charge you about $25. Once that's done you can take the Redbook CD back home to your computer and use one of the many computer programs, such as DA2WAV.ZIP found in the library here or OMI's Disc to Disk product, to pull the digital info back to your hard drive where you get full control back again.
