Well that's an easy one (NOT!). In most cases there is a focus sensitivity circuit that can be adjusted on the oscilloscope. It gives you the best ability to read as far to the left of the track as to the right. As you might already know silver discs differ from gold because (not only because) silver is stamped and gold is recorded. Due to this the track is stamped on the silver (pretty uniformly) and laid down on the fly on the gold. So, if you can imagine driving down the California coast line at 6X speed and enjoying the view or driving on a straight road. Sorry, that's too far out there. Anyhow, what I am trying to say is gold disc is harder to read. Most drives will not give you the same performance specs using gold disc as they do with silver. Try it. There are other things we can play with but they are too specific so let's just say we tune up our drives with CD-R in mind. Hope this helps. FN.
