Laurie –
Exciting? Try sailing/motoring through some of our pea soup fogs off the coast
of Maine straining, willing, begging to hear the gong off the headland before
you are up on it! Too many years ago when I first moved to Maine I treated
myself to a two week sail on a three masted scooner. It was one of the smaller
ones and not fancy like they became. We sailed, rail in the water, for a week
and then explored islands in the fog for the second week. I can still close my
eyes and see it all over again. Sleep on the deck at night moored off of
Matinicus Island and see every star like they are a foot over your head.
For many years I had a friend who had a "stink pot" that we used to explore all
up and down the coast into the little harbors and isolated islands. Not the
same as sailing but still got you out on the water. Now I'm married to a former
Coast Guardsman who says anything under 110 feet isn't safe <G> He stopped in
NZ on the way to Vietnam and was there for over a month since the CG boat
needed repair. He once promised that we would go every where he went in the
service so I could see the places. NZ and OZ are top of the list for me even
ahead of Hawaii.
We often see the big sailing yachts cruising the coast in the summer. Shame the
season doesn't last longer.
