DXFOUT and 3DSOUT will give you *very* different results from the same AutoCAD
geometry. Read Chapter 11 of Inside 3D Studio for the whole, detailed story.
For maximum control I recommend using DXF.
If you have to export ACIS then use 3DSOUT.
