Todd, That Vega crack was valid. I had a 1973 hatchback model, brand new. Within the first 100 miles, a shift up into 2nd @ 15 mph (right from the curb), blew the transmission, and dented the floor under my foot. At 10,000 miles, the engine blew – well, melted, actually. Chevy insisted I replace the block. This eventually was attributed to the lack of a coolant recovery system – a design flaw. I was reimbursed about a year later. Fun car, though – my mom always wondered how I managed to smash the tail-lights (driving the Mulholland dirt road & climbing a concrete tread onto hillside construction sites).
