This is probably no suprise to you but AutoCAD is the VERY common tool of choice (no need for AME) if only for the reason that the majority of architectural projects begin and evolve in that format. Its accuracy is superb and additional support unequaled – both making up a little for its lack of a good 3D-modeling front end. As a student you do qualify for a hefty discount (I think it's about $500) so don't let the list price scare you too much. Learning both 3DS and ACAD is a powerful combination and one that will make you valuable to many firms. – Phil p.s. do not even consider ACAD-LT since it lacks any real 3D ability.
