There are a couple of very good versions of Emacs around in thublic domain. In fact, the one oGPe Workbench disk is based on one of them. They are MicroEmacs v30 (getting old, but the basis of all the others), MicroEmacs 3.9e (3.10 coming soon), and MG2a (used to be MicroGNU, based on GNU Emacs by the originator of Emacs [RMS]). Check the Fred Fish disks for copies of them (see the list in the back of any Amazing Computing). I recommend MG2b. David Masterson p.s. Oh yeah, I use MicroEmacs 3.9e and MG1b on various Unix systems as well — they support Amiga, Atari-ST, Unix, MS/DOS, etc.
