Steve: I agree with your point about the musician who forgoes scales. However, I've found it to be the other way around. That is, when a freshman at Berklee, my Composition and Conducting professor told me I couldn't do that because 'you didn't learn that yet,' he was right in a stupid kind of way. I find that a deeper understanding of theory, modes, harmony, intervals, etc. help me attain, in practice, ideas that are already in my head, but can't get off my fingers. Roger
